Short term
Last week, the average Dutch power price was 71.9 €/MWh. Except for Friday, there was little wind generation. On Friday, wind generation increased significantly in both Germany and the Netherlands, causing day-ahead prices to drop overnight to below the variable costs of gas and coal power plants. Over the weekend, prices fell as low as -60 €/MWh in the afternoon.
Gas continued its upward trend last week. The September contract closed nearly 4 euros higher at 40.4 €/MWh. This increase appears to be largely driven by geopolitical tensions, with the threatening situation in the Middle East and Ukraine’s unexpected attack on Russian territory causing market unrest.
