Net metering scheme terminated by 2027

Short term

Last week, Germany experienced a lot of wind generation while the Netherlands, except for the north, saw almost no wind generation. Partly because of this, Germany was almost 7 euros cheaper than the Netherlands. The average Dutch spot price was 55.8 €/MWh, which is 7 euros lower than the previous week.

Two weeks ago, we saw a slight decrease in gas prices for the coming months, but last week they increased slightly again. The gas price for June and July settled at 30.8 and 31 €/MWh, respectively. CO2 prices dropped by one euro to 70.7 €/EUA. Dutch power for June and July dropped to 62.6 and 66.8 €/MWh. Clean spark spreads for the same months worsened by nearly 3 euros. The clean spark spread for June and July are now -21.3 and -17.6 €/MWh respectively.

Lange termijn

Last week, the new coalition agreement was released. It included plans to cut the Climate Fund by about 300 million in the coming years. The fund is to be used to invest in carbon capture storage (CCS) technologies and green hydrogen, among others. If necessary, investment in blue hydrogen as an intermediate step can be considered. Blue hydrogen is seen by various parties as a first step towards a hydrogen market. The high cost of electrolyzers, which split water in the production of green hydrogen, is seen as a significant barrier. Additionally, the net metering scheme will be scrapped as of January 1, 2027. The abolition of this will still need to be approved by the Senate.

For 2025, gas prices rose by nearly one euro, closing at 36 €/MWh. CO2 prices fell by one euro to 73.5 €/EUA. The Dutch power contract dropped just 20 cents, ending the week at 87.6 €/MWh.
